Not an Island

John Donne wrote a poem entitled “No Man Is an Island.” No one person is meant to live entirely without others and your life impacts others around you. An island in and of itself sits alone and may even go uninhabited for the lifetime in which it exists.

God did not create man to be alone. In the beginning, He saw Adam and even though God knew He was a good creation He saw Adam needed someone to do life with. He created Eve.

The two of them loved God and enjoyed having their lives joined together with His. They followed and did what He said, until they were talked into going against what God had planned for their lives. When you eat the “fruit” you’ve been told not to—conforming to the world’s ways instead of allowing God to transform the way you think—it will never end well.

For Adam and Eve, the fruit they ate got them banned from the life of paradise with God in Eden. From then on no one could have the perfect relationship with God that man had in the beginning of creation.

For you and I, the fruit that tempts us is anything of the world that would make us stumble in our walk with Christ. When you choose to walk without God and without the hope He can give, you are trying to live as an island.

But God send Jesus to be Immanuel—God with us. Not only are we not supposed to do life alone, we aren’t supposed to do it without Him. Doing life without Him means you do it without His love, grace, joy, and mercy to guide and protect you.

You can still be a good person doing good things, but apart from God you won’t be able to do anything to true and eternal significance. Jesus came to save us all. He came so you could again do life with God.

It’s time to stop eating the fruit of this world and allow God to be with us, guiding us to live the best life He has for us. Have you been eating too much worldly fruit or would you say you are for sure living with Christ?
