Have you ever committed to doing something and other things kept grabbing your attention along the way? If you answered yes, you’re in good company as we are all guilty of this from time to time—even kids!
My youngest is seven and for some reason bedtime seems to take way longer than it should. He keeps getting distracted by a toy or a book or even his brother. What about you? What things distract and ultimately hold you back the most?
We often know what we should do, but for some reason it isn’t what we do. Paul writes about dealing with this himself in Romans 7. Some people when faced with the decision to commit their lives to Christ, they get distracted by the voices in their heads.
God wants to not only change your life, but to impress Himself upon your heart. He doesn’t ask for you to have your life in order or to complete certain steps before following Him. Actually, it’s just the opposite.
He didn’t come to save the healthy. He came to help the “sick” (Luke 5:31). We are all born as “sick” sinners and when you try to control your life it is a futile effort.
If there was anything you could do to make it on your own there would have been no reason for Jesus to come and die for you. God sent Him to live, die, and be resurrected so that your sin would no longer be a death sentence. His sacrifice is the only thing that has saved your life.
Once you decide to follow Jesus and allow Him to lead your life, it isn’t necessarily smooth sailing from there on out. Committing your life to Christ is often described as being reborn and you get a second chance at doing things His way.
From the moment you make this decision, you are saying what He wants is more important than what you desire. Everything you do should reflect your commitment to Him—every decision, word, and thought. If you’re thinking this is impossible, it is. But nothing is impossible with Jesus.
You and I will continue to make mistakes, but living life with Him beside you means He is always there for you, with you, and will always forgive you. Surrender and commitment are to be daily prayers for even the most devout Christ follower. It isn’t a one time thing and will take a lifetime to live out.
Too many other commitments pull you in a myriad of directions and while you are involved, you won’t be living your best life. What things have been distractions keeping you from the life God has for you? Are you saying yes to just good things or the God things in your life?
