Your time and attention is used up by many things on a daily basis. Between work demands, family needs, and unexpected happenings, your energy is zapped by the time your head hits the pillow at night.
So how can you keep from being distracted from the things that actually matter most? Keep your eyes on Jesus. Sounds simple enough, but it can be hard to do day in and day out.
In Luke 10, Jesus visits Mary and Martha. Martha was so busy with preparing food, cleaning house, and making everything go well she forgot why she was even doing those things to begin with.
She even got upset with Mary because she wasn’t doing anything to help her. All Mary was doing was sitting at the feet of Jesus.
Martha had the best of intentions to try to make things go smoothly and getting things done, but in preparing and doing she lost sight of what was most important—spending time with Him.
Was it Martha or Mary who got things right? While it’s good to get things done and to be prepared, Mary got this one right.
Sometimes less is more. Focusing on Jesus helps you to see what is really important. Taking the time to slow down, stop overcommitting, and finishing the work He has given you to complete is what leads to a purposeful life.
What work has God specifically given you to do?
