Pleasing People

One thing I’ve learned that I’m sure you have too, it that pleasing one person ultimately means that we will disappoint another. This is just the way it is. We are afraid to say no and as a result, we are over scheduled, overcommitted, and overwhelmed—a clear indication we may be a people pleaser. Now that we have had a moment of confession, how do we fix the place where we find ourselves? The answer is simple and difficult all at once. Learn to say, “no.” In Nehemiah’s time, the wall around Jerusalem had been destroyed and the city overtaken. Even though he knew very little about doing it, he felt called by God to head up the project of rebuilding the city wall. God was calling him to do a great work and many things tried to distract him, but he knew that if he came down from the wall before it was done, there would be a chance he wouldn’t complete what God had called him to do. We have to prioritize the great things God wants us to do and not let all the other good things distract us from getting them done. The ones we love should get the best of us and not the left overs. What has distracted you from what God wants you to do?
