Happiness

I was recently rereading the classic A Christmas Carol. It reminded me how no one starts out with greed in their heart, but the feeling of never having enough can grow so large over time that it consumes your every move.

Scrooge’s heart hardened over time because he saw money as a way of gaining power and used his power to control others and situations dishonestly. Throughout history tax collectors were the same way. They helped collect taxes for whoever was in charge at the time.

Many though would manage this money unfairly and dishonestly and as a result they became some of the richest people in their towns and cities. Exploitation of power and money and the need to always have more of it can be a spiritual stumbling block to anyone—especially to those who choose to follow Christ.

One of the Ten Commandments is to not put any other gods before Him in your life. When you allow money and material possessions to be the driving force in your life, you will always drive a wedge between you and God.

This mindset will never bring you true happiness. It will only bring temporary contentment. Scrooge was visiting by three spirits that illuminated his past, present, and future to highlight his need for a heart change.

In real life, God can turn the most stubborn hearts to flesh and help you to become more receptive to His voice and also to live the life He planned for you.

What is bringing you happiness in life? Is it temporary (from the world) or do you feel happiness and joy no matter what (from God)?
