The story of the birth of Christ is all about the greatness of ordinary people. God didn’t send His Son to save a select few—the social elite if you will.
He came to save us all and what better way to do it than with humble beginnings. God can do extraordinary things with ordinary people.
When Jesus was born, the first people that were told by the angels were the shepherds in the fields nearby. Being a shepherd wasn’t the most worthy of professions. In fact, they were known as some of the lowest people around.
Most of them probably had little hope. It had been hundreds of years since the prophecy of Christ was given and it was probably “living as usual” when it felt like the prophecy would not be fulfilled.
Then seemingly out of nowhere the Angel of the Lord came to Mary and said she had found favor with God and not to fear the coming of the Savior of the world.
He told Joseph, a simple man, the same thing about the Son soon to be born to his fiancé whom Joseph would accept as his own.
When it came to the shepherds, the radiance of the Lord’s glory shown around them that night. It was so unexpected and I’m sure at some point they thought to themselves, “Why me?”
God’s answer was “Why not?” Just because the rest of society didn’t accept them didn’t mean God would overlook them too.
As the glory of the Lord was bright around them, they were humbled and gave glory to God. What impact does the birth of the Savior have on you?
