Most of us find ourselves in a busy season from time to time. You can’t seem to find the time to do what you want and spend too much time doing what “has to be done.” It is during these times that everything tends to get out of wack in the priorities department.
One thing that helped me recently is writing out all my priorities. Try it. If listing what you need to do for a whole week is too overwhelming, try one day. List out everything you have to do from work, homework with the kids, soccer practice, and dinnertime that you hope includes everyone around the table together. Include times for specific things, too.
Now take your list and prioritize it—one being the most important thing to accomplish. If your list looks anything like mine, it will be very eye opening for you. At the top of the list is usually work and then everything else for the day fills in after. Don’t get me wrong, work is very important, but should it take priority in your life?
How much time do you spend at the office? Do you then take work home with you to finish in the evening? Are you sending last-minute emails before you go to bed? See a pattern here? Life gets busy and overwhelming when you don’t set healthy limits and habits. Certain priorities can take over your life—work being a major one.
You may be in a place right now when you have to work even multiple jobs just to make ends meet. I encourage you no matter what season you find yourself in, please take time for you and more importantly take time to rest. If God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, how much more so should we intentionally take time to rest?
If He takes care of the little sparrows and doesn’t let them go hungry, He will certainly not let you go without what you need. We cannot all work jobs that we absolutely love, this just isn’t realistic. But you can make a point to love what you do. Pray for God to give you a passion for people and work hard to create relationships with co-workers that open doors for you to share your faith. God opened doors for you to have to job you have for a reason and it wasn't just to attain wealth and material possessions.
Keep work at work. Set boundaries to get things done before you clock out, including setting things up to begin where you left off when you return the next day. How do you plan to be intentional about being love to others and taking time for rest and rejuvenation?
