You’ve heard it said, “You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.” There are definitely people in our lives that make it difficult for us to love them. The beginning of the holiday season is approaching in the coming weeks.
This thought may scare some and bring them anxiety while it brings joy and happiness to others. There are some who have been toxic in your life and God says to guard your heart. Sometimes it is necessary for your mental and spiritual well-being to cut yourself off from certain people, but not from everyone.
Whether you’re anticipating the season or not, one thing is important to note. An invitation to be at the holiday table with friends and family isn’t to be seen as a reward.
Instead, to share one’s table with others is a gift. God set a place for you at His table long before Christ even came to die and take on your sins. He planned in advance for you to be a part of the family.
Christ’s salvation is a gift for you and for me, but it is not a reward. A reward would suggest you have done something to earn it. There is nothing you can do to save yourself from your sins.
The sacrifice that Christ made for you gives you the opportunity to reconcile your relationship with God. There is a place at the table for you. Accepting Jesus seals your invite and your name is written in the guest book—the Lamb’s Book of Life.
So as the holidays approach and you begin to think about who you’re inviting to your table, think about God and His acceptance of you. He meets you where you are, accepts who you are, and showers you with His love. He is happy to see you.
How can God’s love for you change how you love and accept others?
